One question that we get asked time and time again is why we can’t just install the new contract flooring directly over the top of the existing flooring? (aka bodge it!)
The answer is relatively straight forward, and that is, in order for us to deliver a clean installation that will be durable and stand the test of time then we need to ensure a strong bond to a dry, flat, smooth, and sound subfloor. This is especially true in a commercial setting, where future issues arising can cause major headaches once trade is up and running and all stock/equipment is in its place.
It would be nigh on impossible to guarantee a job that was installed without the required level of preparation!
CONCRETE SUBFLOORS
When installing over a concrete subfloor the minimum level of preparation normally required would be the application of a suitable smoothing compound. This creates a strong, flat, and smooth surface for your new flooring to bond to. We like to use Stopgap 1200 Pro where appropriate.
A common issue that can be present with concrete subfloors is damp, especially in buildings built pre-1970. Damp is easily detectable with a hygrometer and any subfloor with a relative humidity (RH) reading above 75% will need addressing with the application of a suitable damp proof membrane (DPM). If not addressed this can lead to the smoothing compound lifting from the concrete and causing big, crunchy bubbles in your flooring!
TIMBER SUBFLOORS
When installing impervious flooring over a timber or raised access subfloor, this would normally mean the installation of flooring grade 6mm plywood, which is then smoothed out with a suitable feathering compound.
There are also flexible, fibre bonded smoothing compounds available which can be used where required.
CERAMIC/TERRAZZO TILES
When the existing flooring down is ceramic/terrazzo etc it may not necessarily be required to uplift the existing flooring prior to installation. If the existing flooring is sound and secure, then with specialist primers and smoothing compounds it may be possible to apply directly over the top of the tiles.
GETTING IT RIGHT, FIRST TIME
So, when installing new vinyl safety flooring, marmoleum, or impervious flooring then arguably the most important part of the job is to get the preparation right. Time and expertise are required to ensure everything is done correctly first time around and any lumps, bumps or ridges are going to show through your new flooring ruining the look of your newly installed commercial flooring!
A professional flooring company will always arrange a site visit prior to any works going ahead to ascertain exactly what will be required prior to any works going ahead and will be able to check exactly what type level of flooring preparation will be required prior to any works going ahead.
They will also have all the required mechanical equipment to make sure the preparation is done correctly, including bully strippers, STR machines and grinders, paddle mixers etc to ensure everything is done professionally and at speed.
